Setting: In post apocalyptic Japan an important school exists within Tokyo Bay. The school is called Honnouji Academy. It towers over four residential areas that spiral down to form a large mountain. The level right beneath the school belongs to the wealthy and privileged. They are ranked at Three Stars. Below them exist the Two Stars, the middle class, and then the One Stars, the lower middle class. The biggest level exists at the very bottom where the No Stars reside. This area is the slums and the people here struggle to survive. Mako and her family live here as does Ryuko who houses with them.
But what is the significance of the Stars ranking system? Honnouji Academy presides over all these levels and is also responsible for giving out these Star rankings. Based on a student's abilities they receive these rankings with Three Stars being the strongest and No Stars meaning you have little to no abilities at all. The Academy is ruled by the iron fist of the Student Council. All members are Three Stars save for their president, Satsuki Kiryuin, who exists on a level all on her own. Daughter of a highly wealthy and influential corporation that owns the school, Satsuki rewards those with Star rankings special living uniforms that enhance and sometimes give supernatural abilities. These uniforms are called Goku Uniforms. They are produced by her family's company and are a form of sentient clothing made out of Life Fibers. However only a certain percentage of these uniforms can be made out of Life Fibers before the clothing overwhelms a subject and goes berserk. Goku Uniforms with more than 50% Life Fibers are unheard of.
With these at her disposal Satsuki gives the strongest ones to her loyal Elite Four aka the other memebers of the Student Council. All of them hold Three Star rankings and would gladly throw down their life for Satsuki. With their loyalty at her disposal she rules over the rest of the students and staff of the academy. Only she can give out Goku Uniforms, only she can grant students a Star ranking and only she is to be obeyed and practically worshiped in a very fascism like system.
One day a mysterious transfer student from a far away place rolls into town. Wielding one half of a giant scissor blade and out searching for information about her murdered father, the student Ryuko Matoi crashes into the school in her search. It's revealed that her scissor blade can destroy Goku Uniforms and was created by her deceased father. Ryuko demands to know where the other half of the blade is because the one who has it is the murderer she's searching for. Believing Satsuki has the information she seeks Ryuko confronts her. She tries to fight her but is extremely out matched and is forced to flee.
Lamenting how weak she is while surveying the ruins of her destroyed family home, Ryuko suddenly finds herself dropped through a hidden door underneath her. Upon being injured in the fall and spilling blood, what appears to be a living sailor fuku (sailor uniform) springs to life and forces itself on her body. It demands to drink her blood in exchange for being worn by her and lending her its power. At first Ryuko is quite freaked out and even more so when it transforms into a very skimpy version of itself. However she discovers this outfit gives her extreme strength, speed and fighting abilities like nothing she could dream of.
Ryuko discovers this living sailor fuku can speak and was developed by her father however only she is able to hear its voice. It has no memory of where it really came from or why it was left there for Ryuko to find but it claims that it might remember something if it stays with her. She names it Senketsu, literally meaning "fresh blood" as her blood is the catalyst for tapping into its power and causing it to transform. She uncovers that Senketsu is known as a Kamui, a rare form of living clothing that is made 100% out of Life Fibers thus making it completely sentient.
Together with Senketsu Ryuko uses this new power she has acquired to search for her father's killer and defeat Satsuki.
Personality: Ryuko is not a complex person to understand. That isn't to say she isn't complex or doesn't have layers to her. Rather it means she wears her personality entirely on her sleeve and it isn't take much of a genius to understand how she works.
Ryuko is a fierce girl. Her very presences is overpowering in the way she carries herself. She seems to show little fear in any given situation even when facing off against the terrifyingly overpowered Satsuki. Her very demeanor says it all: she is a fighter and a damn good one. This most likely comes from her early life as a delinquent that got her into fights all the time; fights she dominated in and earned respect form from schoolmates. Ryuko is brash in her fights, boasting that she'll win and how bad she'll beat up her opponent. She tends to underestimate her enemy when first facing them and usually learn the hard way what a poor decision that was. Her very stubborn nature helps pick herself back up from defeat however and allows her to never give up on her ultimate goals. Her hardheadedness also means she rarely follows the rules and has little interest in a structured ladder society.
Ryuko definitely loves a good fight and will never back down from a challenge. She doesn't have much pride in the way she fights either. She isn't afraid to flee from battle if it becomes to taxing for her body or if it's clear she's entirely outmatched. She fled from numerous battles in the beginning as she tried to learn how to better use Senketsu. Her fighting is based on little honor as well. She will pull out any trick she can think of in her drive to win. Her favorite strategy during the battle against the Elite Four was "get reckless" in which she charged them with seemingly little thought. However this was not the case. Her abrasive nature can certainly be a cause for someone to equally underestimate her as could her aforementioned strategy. However Ryuko shows some considering intelligence in a fight and despite recklessness always being at her core it's clear that she thought some things through before acting. This is evident in her victories against the Elite Four.
Despite her usually loud and demanding personality Ryuko has a quieter side to her that develops as the series progresses. She develops a soft spot for Mako, the first friend she made at school, and her family. Ryuko laments to Senketsu that she always use to eat dinners alone after her mother died and her father became obsessing with his work. She displays a bit of loneliness in that regard and expresses her happiness to have Mako there with her to share dinners with. Mako thus becomes a target by some of her enemies to lure Ryuko into fighting. Despite her wild nature in battle Ryuko will help others in need and will not harm innocent people. Although at first she only fought for revenge she has learned to fight to protect those she cares about and has gained a stronger resolve in her life.
Appearance: Ryuko is a teenage girl of medium height. Her hair is black and short with a wild red streak on her bangs. Her eyes are strikingly blue and fierce looking. She owns only a single outfit and that's Senketsu. When not in battle it takes the form of a sailor fuku with eyes and exposing her middle. When in need of its powers during a fight Ryuko uses the crimson glove on her hand to transform Senketsu into a more battle ready but extremely skimpy form. When changed into this version her hair also changes, gaining more red and becoming more feathery looking.
Abilities: On her own Ryuko is a formidable fighter. Although she stood little chance against the incredibly skilled Satsuki she held her own without any supernatural powers. She knows how to wield her blade all on her own. She can also move quickly and jump fairly high.
However it's with Senketsu that all those abilities are enhanced and Ryuko becomes a truly formidable fighter. When transformed Senketsu provides her complete protection. Despite the revealing appearance of the outfit it's actual the equivalent of wearing a thick suit of armor. She can be thrashed around and hit multiple times and remain unscathed. On top of that Senketsu gives Ryuko supernatural speed and strength. When she defeats a Goku Uniform Senketsu can absorb its Life Fibers and add to its own power as well.
Senketsu has amazing adaptability in a fight thanks to Ryuko's quick thinking and mastery over the Kamui. Thanks to her battle with the Elite Four it can now transform into a bladed version of itself (often used when Ryuko loses her scissor blade) and even a rocket ship version that can take to the skies (often used to escape or gain an advantage over a ground opponent.)
Senketsu can only transform to its full potential upon drinking Ryuko's blood, however. Using the crimson glove on her hand, a built in syringe gives Senketsu blood and allows the transformation. It also feeds Senketsu blood as she fights meaning that overexerting herself can cause Ryuko to pass out from too much blood loss.
It should be also noted that for all her brawl Ryuko actually has some brain to back it all up. During numerous fights against the Elite Four (and lesser students) Ryuko showed considerable strategy in defeating them all despite one of her favorite strategies being "get reckless". She is often using the abilities of her opponents' Goku Uniforms against them too.
Inventory: Her red Scissor Blade which she can transform into a smaller, actual scissor sized version and keep hidden in a small gun like holster at her hip. She will also have her crimson glove and Senketsu as well.
Suite: Ryuko is use to living in rich school dorms in her early life and then later in the slums with Mako. Thus a good middle ground would place her in the Earth Sector in Tu Shanshu. This middle class sector would be plenty enough for her along with two floors to her living space. Nothing super fancy but enough room to live comfortably in and stretch her legs a little. The Earth Sector also seems fitting due to the focus on clothing and the somewhat grumpy nature of the people there. That and the turf wars. Ryuko does love her some
